Like most kids growing up during the 90’s, the A80 Supra was a car that caught my eye for all the right reasons. Its styling is classic, yet simple. There’s the fighter jet inspired cockpit, large spoiler flowing off the trunk, and one of the most loved and hated power plants, the 2JZ.
Being a Toyota fanboy, I was excited to find out that the Supra name would live on with the release of the new A9. After watching all the press releases and hype build up over the new generation of Supra, I was ready to see it for myself.
Fast forward to February of 2019, Larry and I are in Daytona Beach, Florida to photograph Toyota’s 2019 TRD vehicle lineup ahead of the Daytona 500. It’s the Wednesday before the big race and we have two locations planned for our TRD family shoot.
The first location is Daytona Beach itself. As we waited in our rental car by the beach, we decided to do a last minute rundown of Larry’s shot list. Then, like something out of a movie, the TRD family pulled up with their whole line up behind us waiting for the magic to happen. This was the first time we got to see the A90 on the streets and boy does it look good.
It wasn’t in the glamorous way that I had hoped but it was exciting nonetheless. In person this Supra had all the right angles and proportions. The body lines leading into the duckbill spoiler flowed seamlessly.
The hard angles on the front bumper guided my eye perfectly into the teardrop headlights. I know it’s a bit cliche, but it was love at first sight.
After we all pulled onto the sand and the sun started to rise I got a good look at all the TRD vehicles Toyota brought out. The new TRD Rav4, with its sharp new body lines, made for a futuristic and well-executed redesign. It fit right in with the aggressive TRD Camry and Avalon.
We arranged them alongside the TRD Pro 4x4’s for the group photo then proceeded to run some flying V’s.
The rain didn’t stop Larry from getting his always amazing shots and after being covered in water and sand, we finished off the shoot with solo shots of the Rav4 and Supra.
Check out the video we made and decide for yourself how much you like love the A90.
